 piccolo tones & fingerings

I've played the flute for years, but just recently picked up the piccolo. My first octave C, and second octave D, E, and E flat are very airy, sometimes F & G as well, while the higher notes have a nice solid sound. Any suggestions? And I do already have an alternate fingering chart. For second octave D, in the alternate fingering chart it shows an X where the E flat key would normally be shown - I haven't been able to figure out what this means.

That doesn't sound right. Are you sure it isn't just leaky pads somewhere under the left hand? I ask because even with leaks the third octave notes can work. And you shouldn't need any alternate fingerings very much, until you get up in the 3rd octave, and sometimes on C, C#, and D above the staff.

It's common for the E natural to be a little stuffy, and cracking the trill key, the D one, can vent it better.
Lowest C shouldn't be airy/leaky, unless there's a leak in one of the three pads. That'd mess up all notes. Closed keys are less likely to have leaks, so check the C key first.

I think a middle D is a middle D. I can't think of any room for alternate fingering on it.
