 Intermediate flute
Author: Kathy

My daughter has been playing a beginner's flute for 5 years. She has been pressing me to buy her an open hole flute but finances are an issue (I also have a trombone player wanting to "step up" and they are both marching). I have been watching for something that we can afford but the details are very confusing to a non-music person. Is there a place I can go to get some non-salesman training? I have spoken to the band directors and they are recommending "good deals" that run around $1000 used.

Hello. I would be in the same boat as your children and I am probably the same age. I play flute and I really want an open hole flute too. I don't have one yet, but I would recommend that you could probably go to a music store and "rent to own" a second hand flute or a new one if you want to pay the big bucks.

Buy a Professional Model. It might seem like a bunch more but in the long run its cheaper, Trust Me (from experence).

I bought an open-hole b-foot Gemeinhardt model 3 from WWBW.com. They're only $400, but you can get them c-foot, b-foot, open hole, closed-hole, straight-line or off-center G. I really like it. The keywork is comfortable and smooth, it is very responsive, I can get up to high d with no great difficulty, and it sounds good and is in tune.

Go to a music store - they can help a lot. I just got a Geminhardt open-holed, b-foot, with a solid silver headpiece and silver plated body and foot on Ebay for $700, and it was in really good condition! We saved several hundred dollars on that. If they're marching, I reccomend keeping the old instrument and having them march with that one. I do that, especially because if it starts to rain, the flute's pads can get really messed up. Hope this helps!
