 plus sign above notes

i was looking at the score to rhapsody in blue and at the section where the basson and the oboe have the melody and the piano plays this crazy rhthym in the background, the horn comes in with whole notes and half notes. there are plus signs above the notes. what do they mean?

i take it u mean french horn?? that plus means to plug the bell...with your hand. and play the note a half step either up or down. u play the note a half step above/lower b/c u're stoppoin teh sound and totally changing hte pitch.
