hi. i have been playing the e-flat clarinet for some time now and i am trying to expand my range on it. i can reach the 8va D (D7) on B-flat clarinet fine, but i can't seem to get the e-flat clarinet to respond to the 8va B (B6) and up. is there any suggestions on alternate fingerings or reeds/mouthpieces ect.? Thanks a lot! :D

the fingerings i use for B6 and C7 are:
B6: RT G#12-|12-
C7: RT G#1--|1--F#

my horn is a buffet e11 e-flat clarinet
my mouthpiece is a clark w. fobes san francisco
i use a van doren optimum ligurature with this mouth piece
my reed is a van doren strength 3.5 reed
(i plan on buying the van doren v12's soon)

Generally speaking, the Eb clarinet does not play above altissimo A (after that it begins to cause internal bleeding). The length of the instrument does not allow to overblow anywhere near as easily to get to the very top notes. I find that if i really force it, I can get a C out of that thing, but it isnt practical. You may want to try a slightly harder reed (i use 4.5-5) but be sure it doesnt sacrifice the tone quality (altho this is an Eb clarinet so i use the term "tone quality" loosely) or articulation of your other, more important, registers. Technically, playing an Altissimo A on Eb is the same note as D7 on the Bb. Keep at your fingerings, or try some others on this site. Good luck! and buy Ear plugs!

Um, the Eb I've played reaches top E (third register) ... it's an Olds plastic one lol with a Vandoren 3 reed. O yeah, with its own m'piece too. It plays quite easily, and on a good day it has produced top G (third register.) Standard fingerings I think, ie for top D:

thumb, speaker key, -23|1--g# (g# for intonation)

Um, yeah. Hope this has been a little helpful anyways.
