Hello
I've just started to learn the Clarient too! I am teaching myself how to play. At the moment I can play the notes A, B, C, D, E, and F.
I started off with a 2 1/2 reed but now Im using a 1 1/2 reed Im making progress much faster!.
I already play the flute, so its kida similar to that (kinda, lol)
Art.

It's not a matter of how many keys on the instrument, it's the combination of keys and holes that create the notes. At this point don't be concerned with what each key does (some trill keys are used infrequently), just learn a few notes at a time.
Good luck and enjoy playing!

Keys aren't important. Fingerings are, and you can find the fingering chart on this site. Also, I wouldn't use any lighter than a 2 reed, though 2.5 is preferable. It may be a bit easier to play softer reeds, but your tone isn't as good and your embouchure won't develop (your embouchure MUST develop new muscles if you want to get your endurance for playing up, as well as create a good tone). You shouldn't be able to play for more than 10 - 15 minutes at a time when you're first starting off, so if you find that that's how long you can play while using a 2.5 reed, then that's the strength you should use. If you're using a very soft reed in order to practice for 30 - 45 minutes or even more at a stretch, you're actually doing yourself a great disservice.
Spend your time playing simple songs from a method book right now -- you need to simply get used to moving your fingers in different patterns. If you have any questions, feel free to email.
