I am looking at purchasing a new intermediate level clarinet. Right now I am looking at a yamaha ycl-450 or 450n. Any comments or suggestions?

Besidesthe Yamaha YCL-450, please also look for Buffet E11, Leblanc sonata etc that fall within the same price range.
I prefer the Leblanc sonata that appears to have better keywork and wood. But in United States, buffet is more commonly played. Try as many instrument as possible and pick the best that suit you.

Do you think intermediate clarinets are comparable to professional models? I played in highschool and college..then hadn't played for quite a few years. Now I have just joined an orchestra. I have been playing the last year (at my church) on a plastic beginner clarinet. (ycl-250) I have heard many say not to even bother with an intermediate level instrument? What do you think? How much experience do you have?

hey how are you and to answer your question when it comes to playing the clarinet you need to play the buffet and what specific type the either the E11 which has a good bore but a lower entry level to the intermeidiate clarinet range and then there is the E12 which has a more sophisticated bore than the E11 but it is more to your taste but I would consider those two clarinets for you get back to me and tell me what you think.

I would have to agree that the Buffet clarinets are what you want! I have a Yamaha YCL-450 and it isnt a bad clarinet, Its brought me through the sixth, seventh, and now the eighth grades! I didnt really need a new one but I made All Parish Band in Livingston Parish, Louisiana! I had made a deal with my dad that if I made it he would buy me a Buffet R.13. It was $1,100 more expensive than the E.11 and I was having a hard time deciding because of the price difference and that the Yamaha had brought me to 1st chair. my teacher made the final judgement. I have heard from a professional that the buffet E.12 is NOT the clarinet to invest in, nor the E.11. I would recomend that you spend the extra money because the R.13 Will last you your whole life and will never need replacing! I got mine and I havent stopped playing it!!! It is a work Of ART.
Go for the R.13, But ultimatly Its up to YOU!
