Are there any bassoon players who know why one is supposed to depress the Eb key when playing G3? I can't really hear too much of a difference, only that the sound is a bit 'bigger' because it is moving through more of the instrument. Perhaps it lowers the pitch a bit?

Well, if you have trouble playing the top G on the staff, you always play it sharp, it makes it flatter to help.

I suggest using the Eb key in places like band, performances, and where it would be quite embarassing to mess up. but, it is not the correct fingering, and it will be harder in fast passages. Over time, you should be better at tuning, if you do have problems, and then you shouldn't use it any more.

ah, that's what i thought- not exactly necessary. i play bassoon on the side, so i am always solo, and don't worry about tuning too much outside my own horn. i thought it felt a bit cumbersome...

thank you for your reply!
