 Switching Instruments
Author: Riku13

Im in my last year of middle school, and its near time for me to move to high school. I currently play the clarinet, and, I really don't enjoy my instrument at all. In fact, I'd love to switch instruments. I'm a fast learner, and I'd end up having a private teacher, and switching isn't really the problem. The problem is.. switching to what?
I want to stay in the treble cleff, (and if you have another suggestion for me, please don't suggest anything to do with percussion, tuba, french horn or trombone.) and also, if I switch instruments, I really really really need it to be an instrument with a good/decent scholarship.
I dont really worry much if I'll have competition in my high school band.
On a side note. Do the sax's have good scholarships? My best friend is the best sax-ist in our school, and he plays both kinds, so he said if I was to consider a sax, then he'd help me out along with my teacher.
So. What should I change to?

Also, I'd heart it if you didn't suggest one of those instruments (Bassoon and base clairinet, I think it was) that are really tall.

I play the clarinet as well. Last summer i decided to pick up the alto sax as a second instrument and i have found that the fingerings are very much alike. I am getting pretty good at it and i have taught myself. I would suggest picking up the alto sax. I have not found it overly difficult but very enjoyable to play. hope this helps.

I played clarinet all through middle school and then I switched to alto sax in high school. It was just so much cooler and the girls for some reason thought that I was cooler too. The switch was really easy. Fingering is very similar. You would mostly need to work on your lips. I found that there is more work for sax players than there is for clarinetists. You could play any type of music on the sax.

well i play clarinet... i tried to learn tenor sax and i loved it
it was so much more interesting and orginal(we only have 2 in our school)
its really similar to carinet(more than i thought when i started)
but my teacher quit and i coulddnt see myself playing confidently in front of anyone so i have given it up for a while. blah (you dont care)
i want to permanetly make the switch next year
im happy with it and i think a sax switch would be the easiest(and if you are anything like me, more fun) for your case-
;-)
after more partice

ok, first off I'm in high school and I play the tenor sax, alto sax and i'm planning on learning the saprano sax. trust me if you are willing to go into jazz band then there are a whole bunch of scholarships that you can get. in fact i'm only a junior and already i'm on the waiting lists for abou 25 different sax scholarships. so yeah switch to sax.
