 Buffet E-11 clarinets

If you were thinking of purchasing one of these, DON'T. Buffet says it is a good quality, intermediate instrument -- it isn't. I don't own one, but a girl I've helped does. I've played it and examined it, and I don't like it at all. The key action is raised and poorly aligned. The register key opens too far and can't be adjusted (causes all sorts of problems in the upper register). Over all, the clarinet feels very cheap and is difficult to adjust to. The Buffet mouthpieces, as most know, are also total crap.

If you want a good clarinet, stick with a Selmer or a Yamaha student model. If you're looking to really upgrade, go for a Buffet R-13 (I've played on one for 2.5 years and I love it).

I can't comment on the Buffet E-11 itself, but it is unfair on Buffet to say that their standard mouthpiece is crap, because the standard mouthpiece you get with any good clarinet is usually awful, and this includes the Selmer and Yamaha that you mention. You should buy a decent mouthpiece separately from the clarinet.

Kate, I think you found yourself a single bad instrument. Although i also play on an R-13, several members of my section use the E-11 and i've found that most of them are satisfactory. Of course they won't have the same professional level of craftsmanship as an R-13 but they certainly aren't cheap. perhaps you should ask the person you are working with where they got the instrument, if it's used, or if it's been dropped. Just a thought from an experienced clarinetist
