My wife is testing from two to four new professional reeds each from several sources on a 1950s vintage Grenadilla open-hole oboe. Reeds are stored in a 75% Rh (68F) air-tight chamber between tests. They are played in a 50% Rh, 68 F room and tested against a Korg CA-30 or OT-12 tuner. She is experienced with embouchure, jaw position and reed insertion techniques for getting in tune as needed with some of the reeds. She will mainly use these reeds on a Yamaha 411 Grenadilla wood obe, which is now at the factory for repair of a cracked top joint. Should we expect the same tone performance pattern for each of the reeds on both oboes?

very interesting, but it seems that there are still too many variables available for the test to fail doesnt it? most probably they will play well on both instruments. the same reed goes almost the same on all well made instruments, on the other hand, it seems that a vintage open holer will sound much different from what we have today wont they? i play on a yamaha 411 myself too, i am very interested in the results, look forward to hear from you soon.
