What's so hard about playing the oboe? Why do people say that if a person wants to play the oboe they shouldn't play another instrument, they should devote all their time to the oboe?

oboe is a double reed instrument...you try it before you judge.

Depends on how good you want to be.

about not playing another instrument, its just that there are too many things an oboist must bear in his mind set to play well, which by they way gets really cranked up, IF you try to play another instrument.

quote from torus: depends on how good you wanna be. (haha)

you wont want to touch another instrument in 3-4 years, if you just started to play the oboe. i was once a clarinetist, and the bad habits brought into my oboe playing were fascinating...(ok...not...)

It depends on how serious you are about the Oboe.. It is no harder than any other instrument.. The main thing is practice practice and you will be a great oboist.Everyone who has played Oboe has had their own experiences with it.. whether good or bad.. don't let anyone discourage you from their issues with the oboe.

Last February I decided to add oboe to my musical mix (3 yrs piano, 4 yrs violin). The only trouble I've had has been an occasional mix-up of musical note fingerings. When I read the note "A" while playing oboe, I finger the note wrong because my mind connects to the fingering for that note on violin. Bottom line for me... it requires a higher level of focus.

Requires a higher level of focus and the reed thing kicks most doublers' butts.

It kicks some of our oboe-only butts too.
