Do bassoon players tend to learn the oboe first and then switch to oboe, or do they just start out on the bassoon?

A friend of mine started out on flute but wasn't doing as well as she wanted. The music director suggested oboe or bassoon - she switched to bassoon because she thought it looked fun. I came from a flute, alto clar. and violin background and am now playing oboe.nd violin.

Neither one in my experience. Bassoon and oboe aren't very much alike.

they don't share anything too in common right?
i've heard that the bassoon is the toughest beginner instrument so its basically up to the teacher to decide.
i rarely see bassoon players around......they are more rare than anything....haha....endangered to precise...
basically the best instruments are also bad as the bassoonists say....so i guess the bassoon must really not be a superb instrument for one to start off directly with...

All of our bassoon players started off on clarinet and then switched to bassoon after about a year.
Two of our oboe players (including me) started off on flute, and the other one started off on alto sax.
I was first chair flute, but I got sick of it and wanted a challenge. My band director heard and asked me if I wanted to play oboe, because we'd already been through 4 or 5 oboes players (each had lasted less than 2 weeks!) and she was getting desperate!

I DO suggest starting out on bassoon. Which ever instrument you want to end up with, start out on so that you don't carry on reflexes and habbits of original instrument.

I played oboe at first, i couldn't afford my own, so i switched to the only rental instrument available, the bassoon. I didn't like it much, i still play it in our senior band, but i also play oboe again, and i'm always playing wrong notes on my bassoon because i'm used to the oboe, they're so different it's scary. My mouth hurts and i cant' get enough air when i play my bassoon, as a result i get too much air when i play my oboe, i do NOT suggest both. It's grotesque.

i play bassoon. even though oboe and bassoon both use a double reed, they still different...bassoon is a wonderful isntrument, and i dont find it to be difficult at all. just gotta get used to it =P but it's really lots of fun once you get used to it
