 Clarinet Altissimo intonation
Author: Mike Clarinet

Can anyone help me with hints on intonation of altissimo register on clarinet? C# and D are fine with conventional fingering. Eb and E are good if I press the R/H Eb key. F and F# are fairly flat, even with the Eb key using the conventional fingerings. I have tried some of the alternative fingerings, with good intonation results but are quite difficult to use as they do not 'flow' from other fingerings. The intonation of the rest of the instrument is fine. I play a Buffet RC with Vandoren 5RV lyre mouthpiece and Rico Gand Concert Select Evolution #3 reed.

I know personally on my instrument (R13), the pitch of F and F# tend to be a bit on the flat side, you have to tighten (but dont pinch) your embouchure to keep the notes in focus. Try playing long tones with a tuner to get used to what the notes need to "feel" like. Eventually, you should develop enough of an ear to determine if you're playing it right. Also, you may want to try a slightly harder reed as long as it doesn't ruin the sound of the rest of your instrument. Remember, clarinet altissimo (particularly F# and G#) can be nasty so good luck.

I play an R.13 with a Vandoren B.45 mouthpeice and the mouthpiece makes a DIFFERENCE. Get aa B.45! I have never tried a nothe mouthpeice exept my student! You need to start working Up in reeds! I play a Vandoren 4 and am still working up! Also talk to your teacher! If they say you wont need them their wrong. get on the Ask.com and type in clarinet fingering charts( do this also on Google!) to get extra help!
Email me at webfted1@yahoo.com, and title it as "Clarinet Help, Altissimo Octive" so Will know who sent it and the subject so I dont deleat it as spam!!!
