Isn't the E Flat Clarinet a pretty sounding instrument. I guess I love the brightness of it.

I assume you are referring to the Eb soprano, not alto. "Bright" would be a good word for the soprano. I'm still far from making it sound "pretty".
It's nice to know not everyone hates this little clarinet.

I love the baby clarinet! i played it all through middle school, but the band directors won't let me play it in high school though. :(

I'm not surprised! The Eb is like a piccolo flute: one per band is fine, but two is death!
I've heard that some teachers start their youngest students (whose fingers are too small to cover the keys on a Bb) on the Eb soprano. How cute!
Hehe...different from your director, Heather, my band director allows an Eb soprano... but no Eb Alto! In my opinion, the alto is waaay cooler And easier to tune.

I, too, play the Eb soprano clarinet. I practiced it all one summer and then my band director said "hey, we have a lot of oboes, you can't play that," but now it's way different. We just got Holst's first suite in Eb and the Eb clarinet part is really important. I'm the only one who plays it (none of the other clarinets have a tight enough embouchure) but it's really wrecking the inside of my lower lip. And to go from the tiny one to the Bb inside of one 30-minute class is simply death.

I'm sorry, but altos look like sopranos that have had an accident with a plumber.

Yeah, my director allows both, but only one. I'm the only one who ever even thought to play Eb Alto! I agree though, they are a lot cooler and TONS easier to tune!
