there are two girls who are VERY good to say the LEAST at trumpet and they basically run the band and our director doesn't give the rest of our section any challenging parts...except for those two the rest of us always get 2nd or 3rd part! and at least 3 of us are good enough to play first! WHAT DO I DO?!!! its pissing me off....

I know from personal experience the frustration you are describing. Keep in mind that all parts need to be covered. Many times a person may be capable of playing a higher part, but are needed elsewhere to balance the section.

Try talking to your director in a non-judgemental way, by this I mean don't demand a 1st part, but ask
what you need to work on to improve so you can EARN it. Show that you are are not just ready for more of a challage, but are willing to work for it.

In the meantime, work on that 2nd or 3rd part until it is perfect! Not just notes, but dynamics, phrasing, everything. Even a page of whole notes needs attention to sound musical. Pay attention to how your part fits in with the entire band.

Hope this helps.

In addition, you have to realize that the best players will play the first parts. It's entirely possible that you are capable of playing the parts but you have to see it from their point of view aswell (sound, intonation, range, phrasing and the fact that they probably deserve to play those parts). Channel your aggrivation into practice energy and work at it. Who knows how good you could become.

Keep in mind that a band only needs two first trumpets. That means the others are going to end up on 2nd or 3rd to achieve the necessary balance. Your option is to learn to play well enough that it is obvious to the director that one of them should be replaced by you.

You can't all play first or there would be no harmony, counter harmony, etc.

I would like to point out to dee that a band doesnt need only need 2 first trumpets. it depends on how big the band is and how many part there are for a certain part...i mean, it makes sense doesnt it? or maybe its just me...
