i went to my local music store to buy a new mouthpiece for my clarinet. i was hoping for hard rubber and i wanted the vandoren 5rv lyre or whatever. i didn't have enough cash. the salesguy suggested some selmer paris *c or something to me and said that it was plastic. i was thinking 'i want hard rubber why are you wasting my time' does anyone know anything about these selmer paris plastic mouthpieces? apparently even though this mouthpiece was plastic, it was supposed to be very good. i also asked about crystal and he said they could order some POLY CRYSTAL mouthpiece. i was thinking 'what the h*ll is poly crystal'. but really,... what is poly crystal?

For plastic mouthpieces, the Hite Premier, Fobes Debut, and Yamaha 4C are highly recommended by people on the clarinet bulletin board. They are only about half the cost of a Vandoren 5RV Lyre. Note that by buying via internet dealers like the Woodwind and Brasswind, you can get a better deal than at some local music stores. Or take a copy of the ad off the internet around to your local dealers and they may be willing to come close to the price. Keep in mind that the internet dealer will charge shipping and handling so if your local store can come close, it's better (usually) to buy locally.
