 New Bassoon Player
Author: Christie

I'm switching from flute to bassoon for the concert season. Are there any tips I need in order to be successful at playing the bassoon, or any helpful tips to help me learn to play the bassoon at a faster pace? I learn fast and pick up things easily...be honest then: from flute to bassoon, is it that difficult to learn?

Me too, I switched from flute to bassoon. I was tired of all the high notes and fast passages. I found the switch really hard at first because of the size and weight difference, but after a few months, I became easier. The hardest thing was embroshure, and reading in bass clef, but the fingerings are not too bad, and breathing, and posture is almost the same. plus now i get to sit in the back with the low brass, and play slow bass stuff.
What I like the most is the attention I get, so many people came up to me to say they were so happy they had a new member in their low section, and others would ask me what it was.
Anyway, I am happy with my switch.
Why did you switch?

ya, I answered late here but... OMG I was planning to switch to bassoon next year too! I just didn't like so much of the high notes too, especially because I play the piccolo too, even though it's my first year flute. The piccolo and flute are too high! I want to play a low smooth instrument with reeds! :P it's such a coincidince or coinkidink... anyways, yay!

ooh! i switched from flute to bassoon too! and yeah, you do get lots of attention...usually good ones though, because the bassoon is so rare. it's very different...but if you say that you learn fast then it shouldn't be a problem at all...it wasn't for me =P
