 EVERYBODY ANSWER PART TWO...
Author: Julie

Hey... Thank you to those of you who answered my first question! Now, I just want to know WHY you chose the instrument(s) you chose. If you don't mind, please include how many years of experience you've had with music and how old you are.

i'm fourteen and i've been doing giutar for a little over 5 years now. started because my mother said it was either a music class or ballet...so i started taking classical gitaur, and stuck with it ever since. in middle school i started playing percussion, and so i've been doing that for three years. and now i play alto sax, which i just started over the summer, cuz i've been in jazz band for three years, and i fell in love with the saxes, even though i played bass. (bass instead of giutar cuz chords are nasty.)

Hey, I'm Ryan... yea
I'm fourteen years old... I've been playing piano ever since I was... 8 years old and I'm taking my Gr. 7 Piano (fur Elise... yea!) and I chose that because I wanted to get into music... and then when I went to instrument selection before Grade 7, I chose the French Horn, because nobody had yet, and I wanted to be special:), so I'm in my third year of playing the horn (1st horn in gr. 9 band, 2nd horn in the senior symphonic... level above gr 12 band, sry if I'm bragging, I'm just excited lol)... and I've played alto since the summer of '03... first alto in jazz band, played it cause I love jazz, and alto has good parts... been playing flute/piccolo for 2 and a half years... just cause I loved the sound of it, although I don't play it in any band, I play it just as a hobby, oboe for 2 years, which I played in gr 9 last year (when I was in gr 8) because they needed an oboist... been playing it ever since, and clarinet for a year, also for kicks and cause its wiked.... well WOW lol sry 4 the long thing... if u read the whole thing, THANKS! lol well cya l8r,
Ryan

I'm 35 and I started piano lessons when I was 7 because we had a piano at home, and Dad had a work pal who's wife was a piano teacher. I started the violin (Yuk) when I was 8 at school because that was all there was. I had a recording of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" about this time, and I always liked the clarinet being the cat, particularly when the wolf chased the cat into a tree. I just loved the sound, and wanted to play the clarinet. When I was 11, other instruments became available, but all the clarinet spaces were taken and I was offered the oboe instead. I could never get a decent tone out of it although I had no trouble learning the fingering. When I was 12, someone dropped out of clarinet and I was offered that place, and have never looked back. The clarinet teacher was a retired Royal Marine bandsman, who said that my face and jaw were the wrong shape for the oboe, but perfect for clarinet. At school, one of the brass teachers started a swing band. As the people in that band got older and left school, there was no-one at a standard to replace them, so he started a training swing band and asked me to try tenor sax in that band. When I left school, the tenor had to go back, and I bought an alto, which was easier to carry around when I went to University. At University (where I met my wife - also a clarinet player) I did a 2-subject degree in music and electronics. I now work as an electronics engineer but am a keen amateur musician, playing in a concert band and a clarinet quartet and an embryonic sax quartet. That's why I chose clarinet as my first instrument and my years' experience with music.

i play oboe. 17 now. i started about 3 years ago when my senior in band had to find a replacement. but it naturally went on to become my passion and both good and bad music has become the end product of oboing throughout the years.
very tough instrument which you have to think in very different ways. but it is so well worth the effort nowadays i don't even complain on bad reeds! (well maybe sometimes........hehe) for those who want to start on an instrument, take the rare opportunity to include yourself in this rare society of oboists!
