Both are minor sclaes. Harmonic scales ascend and descend in the same pattern, which is the same as the relative major apart from the 7th (the note below the top note), which is raised by a semitione from the key signature. E minor harmonic (relative major is G, which has F# in the key signature) goes like this:
E F# G A B C D# E D# C B A G F# E

Melodic minors ascend and descend in different ways. On ascending, both the 6th and 7th notes are raised from the key signature, but are as per the key signature on descending. E minor melodic goes like this:
E F# G A B C# D# E Dnat Cnat B A G F# E

My daughter went to district band contest and was asked to play a melodic minor. Well needless to say she had never heard that term before. We looked at the scales that her high school band teacher gave her and the word melodic was not on it. I looked at one from another school and they were told what this was. so actually if she were given scales then melodic should have been writtin on the music. RIGHT??email me please.

If both harmonic AND melodic minors are needed, this should be stated. In the UK, in lower instrument exams, candidates are asked for melodic OR harmonic at the candidate's choice, not the examiners. In the higher exams, BOTH are needed and the examiner will ask for both. When I did music exams, my piano teacher asked my which I would like to learn for the lower exams (never did higher piano exams), but the clarinet teacher taught just harmonic minor until both varieties were needed. I suspect that your daughter has learned harmonic. You can tell by if the patterns for ascending and descending are the same as I described earlier.
