I played clarinet from 4th to 8th grade, doubled on alto in 8th, played alto full time 9, 10, and now 11th, in jazz and in concert. this year though I started bari sax in the jazz band.
I've been playing it for about 3 months, and its really hard for me to hit the B, and Bb (doesn't go any lower).
I've been trying to open up my throat as much as I can to get more air through, but its just really hard to get it to work. Some days I'll get lucky and get the notes out perfect, but others it comes out like its trying to jump up an octave.
Also I'd like to add that the horn is in perfect condition. It is old, but my conducter just had a real expensive tuneup on it, and it sounds really good.
I'm in need of some help in hitting those low notes. We're playing Moanin', and I need to be able to hit those notes flawlessly.

I played alto up until my sophmore year and then switched to Bari for marching band and now play the Bari in Jazz. When I first started out I could not even get a low D. Within a few weeks I quickly got up to speed though and now can play the low A with ease. Have you tried have a really relaxed embouchure? I mean REALLY relaxed. Like just go "Blah". That is what a older Bari sax player told me to do and although I had to adjust a bit from what he said it seemed to help. Almost be lazy with it I guess... I don't know. I hope this little bit of info helps (I am doing it right before I go to school) I am not an expert at all so take this with a grain of salt.

P.S. It was a lot easier for me to play on the older Bari we had as opposed to the new one, I don't know why (may have nothing to do with the fact it is old). Also I tried moving the reed around on the mouthpiece and the position of my mouth on the mouthpiece to see if anything would make it easier. Try experimenting...

i think i might know.. try taking more of the mouth peice into your mouth, i once had that problem, i played the alto for years, then i started the bari, i can get the low A if the bari sax has it, but the school just got new bari saxophones, they are really nice yamahas, intermediate, but yeah, try loosening up and taking more of the mouth peice into our mouth...
