Hello All!
Within the next month or so I will be making a trip to the Woodwind & Brasswind Store to purchase a new alto sax. The saxophone I'm most seriously considering is the Yamaha Z Series unlaquered horn, but I was wondering if anyone else has favorite brands in that same price range that they feel I would benefit from test-playing. I need a horn that will get me through HS, college, and beyond, so only experienced players answer, please.

Yamaha is a good brand. also look for Selmers as well. these are the top 2 makers to look for. S&B, Yanagisawa are fair brands as well. vito's wont get you to terribly far. for college and up levels look the the F# key, or you'll have a time getting up there without it. test play all the horns you can get your hands on. the brand you want may not play as well as another. hope this helps.

Yamaha student and intermediate horns use the same bore (inside of the body) as the pro horns, so the sound is fantastic. A Yamaha will also hold up against the abuses of High School Marching Band as well as College Marching, Pep, and tour bands. GOod Luck.

yanagisawas are great horns. beautifully crafted, and played by some of the best. don't get me wrong, yamahas are great to, but yanagisawas are something special.
