 Any good bassoon materials?
Author: Joseph

I got hooked up to bassoon for like 1 and a half years now.
Got frustrated looking for someone to teach me but to no avail. Learning bassoon in my country Malaysia is like asking someone to teach you to fly!!
Anyone got any recommendation on books or other materials that I can use to improve my self-taught bassoon skills?

Firstly you have to buy an elementary method that helps you to first steps into this fantastic world. With this method you better have a fingering chart (the one on this site is pretty good) and try to finger firstly the central notes (from C3 to A4) and practice a lot with them. After that you increase your knowledge with lower and higher notes.
Hopes this helps

The Method for Bassoon by Weissenborn is a classic. He starts on second space C and moves stepwise up and down from there. To keep it interesting he introduces different rhythms and meters very early on, so being already able to read music and especially count rhythm is pretty much a necessity.

I already got a bassoon fingering chart. Im actually playing songs like 'Egmont Overture', Robin Hood etc. What i'm really llooking for now is an intermediate book that can further improve my bassoon playing skills with the absence of a tutor. Any recommendation?

Yes, the Weisenborn is the Bible for the bassoonist however I would also recommend the Pares Studies (scales, etc.) and perhaps going to a music minus one format to get you used to playing with accompaniament. There are various levels of those. Some are solos, quintets, symphonies. Best of luck!
