RE: what clarinet mouthpiece should i get

Try a different music shop. The mouthpiece is arguably the most important part of the instrument, and a good shop should help you get the right one for you. A good shop will let you try a load of mounpieces until you get the right one. I bought a new clarinet recently. I spent an hour selecting an instrument, and then another hour selecting a mouthpiece. I settled on a Vandoren 5RV lyre, which I like, but may not suit you. Not a very helpful answer, but the best advice I can give.

Depending on what you want to invest, there are the Hite Premier and Fobes Debut designed as good quality but inexpensive student mouthpieces and people speak well of them. I believe they also make pro mouthpieces. I've personally used and liked the Vandoren B45 and the Vandoren 5RV.

I agree with mike, it all depends on your personal preference. I played on a vandoren 5rv lyre for about a year and then tried something else. I play on an m13 now and find it is easier to play in tune and also gives me a better sound. To help guide you, ask about the facings and tip openings of the mouthpiece, a longer facing or more closed tip usually works better with a harder reed and vice versa. I wouldn't recommend a student mouthpiece as they aren't of the same caliber of professional mouthpieces. Try vandoren 5rv or b40 or m13 (if you use harder reeds, 4+). Depending on what you get you could pay anywhere from $50-$200. Good luck.

I would strongly suggest the Hite Premeire. It's very inexpensive, and very high quality.
