When I play the low "e" on my alto saxophone it changes octaves. It sounds really bad. What could be causing this?

Maybe you clench too much your embochure? Or you keep a too little piece of mouthpiece in your mouth... sorry for my english :D it can be also a key problem... let an expert see your sax!

the best bet is that 1 of 2 things ur ovtave key is bent at some point or ur embechure is to tight both are easily fixed preoblem just loosen the embechure and drop the jaw while keepiung ur mouth like a rubber band.
hope this helps if u need anymore help email me.

musically yours,
jon k

You could also have a spring loose. Check all the springs in the upper stack near the top. There's an octave vent (not the one on the neck) but a small one connected to the octave key - just look at the mechanism.

Sometimes the spring pops loose and you get the kind of problem that you are having with D, E, F. I had the same problem on my soprano over the weekend.

when I first started playing, I couldn't play from D on up. I had the same problem. it was both embeshure, and a bent octave key, so get it checked out by your band teacher, or a shop, and get someone to watch your embeschure. good luck, have fun,
billy

That's usually where it starts to get hard. When I practice other instruments and mess up my sax playing I have problems with it too. If your confident its not you, it could be a bad pad, which is what I had last week doing the same.
