 is my wood not so good?

interesting site. i play the concert and alto flute. both of mine are made of silver. i have a friend whose buffet flute is was made in the year 1947 and its wood. well i heard that the wood used to make instruments in the recent years is not as dense (thick) as it was in the past. is that true? and why?
