For all you piccolo players out there..... does a wooden piccolo have just as much capacity to project as a silver piccolo??

Well, I've heard that wooden doesn't project as much but it has a better sound quality. That's why a wooden pic is usually used for concert band and a silver for marching. My school only has 2 pics(we're a small band, only 20 people) and a spring popped on the silver one I was using for marching season so they had to give me the wooden one to march with and I really hate marching with a wooden pic. Its usually a little harder to tune, mine's flat a lot, which isn't good when you're marching and playing isn't the only thing on your mind.

Wooden piccolos are usually used more in concert band situations because they have a warmer more mellow tone. Silver ones are used outside because they have a more piercing sound. In response to Lindsay, you are most likely marching with a plastic piccolo not a wood one. Wooden instruments crack and split with the temperature changes. Also you're most likely flat due to the weather, colder weather=flatter notes.

Metal flutes (specifically metal headjoints) tend to offer better projection and isn't effected by humidity like wood is. Tone quality is always highly subjective and to say wooden flutes are the prefered flute for indoor use is innacurate. For symphonic use, wood vs metal seems to be based on regional preference. The wood flute finds greater preference in England and Germany, where the metal flute is highly prefered in the United States and France.

i have played on both and i feel that i get a better sound out of the metal one but it is also personal preference as to which one you play. hope this helps

I've played on both, and i am MUCH more comfortable on the wooden piccolo. It seems to have a better sound and easier playability, and much better for those ppppp spots, because it doesn't clank when you hit the keys. The metal is good for beginners, because #1, they're cheaper and #2 they don't break, bend or crack as easily. Our 2 piccolo players have 3 piccolos, one wooden (for concert use) one metal(for marching use) and one D-flat, for either, usually made of plastic or mixed wood/metal.

I have a metal one and have played on a wooden. Our piccolo player (i don't play piccolo in the band) had a wooden one and it has a much better tone and sounds better than a metal one like I have. I am choosing out a wood one myself because of needing a better sound
