in Oct. we were marching backward at an angle really fast and we had to quikly turn around to play one note, we were moving so fast and the grass was wet, I slipped and fell and my clarinet went flying into the air and landed on the ground and broke into two piece..luckily it was plastic clarinet....but when I fell I landed on my wrist and I almost passed out because I hit my head hard on the ground too, so I went to the nurse (crying because of my wrist) and they sent me to the hospital. It wasn't brocken, but badly swollen and bruised, I couldn't play for two weeks! lol! I felt embaressed when I fell, because no one else did. lol! I laugh at it now :D

Embarassing moments (other than sqeaking - even though I've been playing clarinet for over 37 years):
In Marching Band, I turned around a beat too soon and messed up everyone behind me. The director pointed it out while we were watching the videotape of the performance.
In Concert Band (actually a community band), I was playing the clarinet solo in Light Calvary Overture when I noticed the conductor kind of dancing around & crawling on the floor. I couldn't help laughing & the resulting vibrato was "not pretty". Even my non-musical husband noticed. (It turns out the conductor's baton came apart & flew into the band, hitting one of the sax players in the head.

This past marching band season, we had two blocks of people marching towards each other, and then we entertwined and marched into the center of the football field. During practice on a particularly cold day, we were marching, and the screw on the neck of my saxophone (which was down, because we weren't playing)got caught in a clarinet player's crocheted scarf as we passed each other, and there was a huge mess! LOL

We have a wind ensemble song consisting of four movements. It's an Israli (sp) folk dance, so at the end of the fourth we yell "Hoi!" (croud-pleaser? :/ ) I compleatly spaced out one day, and at the end of the second I started to yell that, but kind of stopped, so even worse than yelling the actual word, I kind of yelled a loud blobness. The WORST part was that the directer was recording it to take home to study, so my yell was perminatly recorded.

Well, this isn't band, but during a woodwind forum at Miami University last semester I turned the page at the wrong time and had to play the entire page from memory. It made me nervous, and even though I may have been able to remember it my nervousness caused me to completely botch it. Fortunately when I got to the page that was in front (which was the last page) I did OK.

When I was in 10th grade, I was second chair in my school's Wind Ensemble. For the holiday concert, we were playing this Copeland medly. There was this 8 measure clarinet solo that was given to the first chair, of course, and she played it really well. The night of the concert, an emergency happened, and she arrived late to the concert, enough to miss her solo. I had to play it. I was soooooooooo nervous that I actually squeaked an entire measure! (Don't ask how that can happen, I don't know the answer to that one) It really sucked, because people were talking behind my back the next day, which was actually the last day of school before Christmas vacation. Now I know to prepare all solos, even if I don't end up playing them.

my most embaressing time was when i got caught in a park in peterborough ont. back in 1995 i went to a park nearby in the early morning before everyone showed up in the main parking lot there was an outhouse for women with two toilets in it. so i went into the on and lifted the toilet seat and removed the base in the floor. i then lowered myself down into the hole into the tank that was half full of excrement. then i put the toilet seat back into place and waited for all the people to arrive. during the day i had about 50 women and girls use the toilet when this one lady came in to use the toilet and after she was done she looked down the hole and seen me, she screamed and went to call the police. they caught me later and everyone heard about this. it was on the news on tv and in the newspaper it was also on the internet at www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_01.04.96/news/nak0104.htm this was true and very embaressing

Well, at the end of one of my (middle school) school concerts that I'm first clarinet in, I nearly fell off the stage because I tripped over a 'tippy' stand as we were getting off the stage...so embarrasing...

Valster's experience reminds me of another embarassing music stand moment: At my first woodwind quintet concert when we stood to take a bow my 7 months pregnant belly almost knocked the stand over. It was not the most graceful part of the performance.

LOL all these stories are crackin me up! I feel guilty not contributing. It's hard to decide on a MOST embarassing band related moment but here's one. I play oboe in a community college band and we did a joint portion of our spring concert with the marine band of our area. Unfortunately there wasn't a marine who played oboe and there was a solo in a song where I had to hold an F for about a measure while everyone was silent. It was such a quiet and slow song already but when it was time for my solo it was felt dead silent and the marine director even made this exaggerated motion with his arms outstretched to me signalling that is was MY SOLO! I tried to play it out and not choke but my vibrato sounded horrible and I had to cut the note a short because it was steadily running sharp. Ugh it was so embarrassing because the marines were so strict and already looked down on me for being only a highschooler lol. To top it off the concert was televised and they closed up on me during to the solo. I never realized how closely i resemble a frog and how much i lick my lips while playing oboe LOL!!! :P -Niles
