i bet this question gets asked a lot and i know some people are sick of replying but i would like know some oboe brands. i would like to know what is the brand, maybe one or 2 middle brands, and then what brand(s) is outright crap (all of the info in one post would be nice rather than one person only saying this is good , then someone else only saying this one is bad). also i heard an oboe under $1000 is not worth the time. if any one can name models of specific brands that are ok, good, crap, that would be greatly appreciated. i'm looking to buy an intermediate model so what kinds of extras (not fancy things)would i need. i heard i should get one some extra F key or whatever

I hope you are not basing your selection of a musical instrument on cosmetic extras. what is better, a beautiful wood oboe with keys of gold that sounds like a duck in heat, or an old ugly oboe made of cardboard and orange plastic crates (wow i over exaggerated!) that lets you produce the most beautiful music? you have to choose the instrument that allows you to play the most beautiful sounds you possibly can.

Good brands for oboes ar a lot, but you have to choose the one that you can play well. I can only tell you that intermediate oboes are with left hand F, Ab/Bb trill key, F resonance key, and so on.
My favourite oboe is Patricola, because I feel really well in playing it and the sound is rich and warm, but for you can be another: Buffett, Boosey, Linton, Fox, etc.

I use a Bulgheroni professional oboe and I think it's very good

the top brands are bulgheroni, loree, marigaux, howarth, laubin, fox, adler, larilee, .........the list goes on......
yamaha and buffet make very good oboes too.....their mid range oboes should be good enough for you.....if thats what you are looking for....

Buffet oboes tend to be EXTREMELY sharp if they are not a highly advanced model.
I have found Loree oboes to make the most gorgeous tones.
You need to PLAY ON THEM before you order them, though, regardless of what you get.
Yamaha is starting to make some good models too.

You should order several oboes from a catalog, and then play them with your teacher. Send the extras back after you've compared them.
