Hi,
I've been playing the oboe for a year and I use a Rico medium reed I got from a store. But I want to buy a professional reed from off the internet somewhere. Does anyone know a good site to buy off of? What kinds of things should I look for in buying a reed? I began playing on the Rico medium, but should I go to a medium hard or hard? I don't know if hard or medium hard are better or not. Basically any help that can be given in leading me to purchase a good reed is much appreciated.

I like Nielsen Reeds. I don't know the URL off hand but if you a search for it you can find it. They have many different types so browse around.
Good Luck

The only best and assured professional reed maker on the net i believe is a chinese from australia. He has studied with people like anthony camden, besides that, a lot of players, including my mentor, has decided to stop making reeds and buy from him. The URL is:
http://www.kge-reeds.com
You can read more about him at the website and also shop.
Be warned that the reeds can be very expensive, but with such quality you will surely not go wrong.

My wife, after a 50-year hiatus, started oboe again and is going through the same reed evolution as you. She has relearned the saying 'you get what you pay for'. Hope our experience helps.
I surfed the internet and found four sites that to me seemed knowledgeable and also mentioned reed sources. Those most frequently mentioned are Charles Double Reed(4), Hodge Products(3),North Texas State(3),Oboe Works(3), Forrests(2),Kestral(2),Nielsen(2),Stuart Dunkel(2). If you type these into Google, you should get their web sites.
We have ordered from a major instrument source in Minneapolis and from a source in west Florida (along the coast)and were not satisfied. She has been satisfied with reeds from two sources.
North Texas Oboe Reeds(www.oboereeds.safeshopper.com)is very prompt in communicating. She has had good experience with his Intermediate Reeds (MS & M)@ $17.50. Have not tried his Pro-Reeds (M, MH, H)@ $22.
Reliable Reed (Fred Capps) (www.reliablereeds.com)professional reed seems to play quite well @$25. Her teacher, who is a university instructor, highly recommends these. This is apparently a medium reed and must be ordered in lots of three, if I understand correctly. David Weber pops up a lot on the internet and he is not taking any more customers. He refers customers to Fred Capps.
We talked to the principle oboist for the National Symphony Orchestra when he was in our area. He said he often uses medium-soft or medium reeds depending on the occassion.
Hope this helps.
