Im a Malaysian who just got hooked up with the Bassoon last year. Strange instrument to ppl here in Malaysia.
Anyway, I got this problem of fungus growth on my reeds.
Whenever I started playing for a while, black stuff starts accumulating on my reed & it refuses to leave even when I brush it with my toothbrush!
Any advice on how to keep my reeds looking new and clean after every use??
All tips and emails are most welcomed posted to joseph_ch83@yahoo.com.
Thanks

hi,
ok for one thing im not a bassoon expert, but i do play oboe, which uses basically the same kind of reed. ok, before everytime u use the reed, make sure u soak it in water. wut i do is i keep a film container (holds a roll of film) and just keep it filled with water and i just keep it in my case. u just dab the reed in the water for about 10 or 15 seconds and then put it in your mouth. also, say your playing a song in a band and u have a break. dont take the reed off of the bassoon, just keep it in your mouth so that it stays wet. also, when your done, blow air through the reed to get stuff out, if theres anething in there. sometimes spit can cause the growth, so try just blowing it out....
hope this helps,
ryan

The only time thats happend to me is when i dont take my reed out of my mouth piece and black stuff comes on it. My teacher said that thats from your saliva not being wiped out of it. Now that i take me reed out each time ive finished playing, it hasnt had that stuff on ever again.
Hope this helps too.. might be a bit late.

I'm not an expert at this sort of thing but, soaking your reeds can help. Also if you can brush your teeth and use mouth wash before you try playing... it may help also.

dont leave your reed on your basoon.
put it back in your reed carrier when done playing
*****if you dont have one get one!
clean your insturment out after each time you play
