Hi, I'm a senior in high school (I play principle 1st clarinet) and several of my fellow band members have come up to me and saying that it would be a good idea to form some type of very small ensemble such as a wind quintet or something to similar effect. I've had a few individuals from the brass sections ask me aswell. Unfortunately i'm not exactly sure how to properly balance a small ensemble in terms of instruments or which instruments i should include. I would greatly appreciate anyone's ideas on what to include in a small ensemble such as this which would create a nice balanced sound and also allowed for transcriptions of others works when necessary. IE writing out a bass clarinet part out for trombone etc. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated and all thoughts are welcome. Thanks, -Derek

i did this not to long ago. see what music you have and what they call for. it's very hard to have your group then get music for it. if you have your music for all woodwinds and you have a brass or two join, then take the lowest woodwind part and give it to the lowest instrument, most likely you might have to transcribe a piece. and then work accordingly. i'm sure your band instructor can instruct you where a good msuic store is and maybe a few composers to work with, or if your school has any ensemble pieces. hope this helps.

There is always the 'Standard' wind quartet of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon. Or a quintet, as above but add french horn. If you are really ambitious, there is the Mozart Serenade for 13 wind instruments aka 'Gran Partita' (I think this is the correct spelling). This is for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassett horns (I believe you can substitute Eb alto clarinets, but I may be wrong), 2 bassoons, 4 french horns and a string double bass. There is plenty music available for clarinet quartet. Some arrangements use a bass as the 4th part, or have optional bass, but most use 4 Bb's. Any good publisher should have a range of quartets on their catalogue. Composers or arrangers: W.A.Crosse Petit Quartet is worth a go. Popular classics arranged by Terry Kenny can be fairly challenging (music from Rossini's William Tell, Smetana's Bartered Bride). I don't know the publishers unfortunately. Try Boosey & Hawkes or Chappell for publishers. Good Luck!
