I would like a dark, mellow sound from my vintage Conn(25908,yr.1913)Tenor sax. How about a Ralph Morgan 3C with a large chamber? With which Reed? Know how to play-don't know much about mouthpieces and reeds....Thanks!!

the more open a mouthpiece is(distance between the tip of the reed to the tip of the mouthpiece) the more bright your sound is. if you are looking for a dark and mellow mouthpiece, you'd want a more closed mouthpiece. i know vandoren V-16 reeds can give you a darker sound. maybe buy a couple reeds from your local music store to test to see what kind of sound they give you. hope this helps.

I can't fully answer your question, but I can give you what may be some useful information. The higher number the reed is, the easier it is to play and hold out a high note.Mabye you can figure out the answer to your question using my information. I hope this can help.
