Hi,
I play clarinet and saxophone. I am looking at purchasing a flute. Is the yamaha 221 a good choice for a beginning player? I have been playing the sax and clarinet for over 20 yrs. but I know nothing about a flute! Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

YFL-221 is already a good flute for beginner. If you are a more serious beginner, I suggest you to buy a YFL 361 or a higher model.
The 361 has a sterling silver head joint and it's sound quality is much better than that of the YFL 221 with the nickel silver head joint.
Good Luck

Is the 361 an open hole flute? Would that be better or easier to learn?

The 361 is an open hole intermediate model. For a beginner, it is more difficult than a closed hole model (e.g. the 221 ) to learn. Since you have to cover the holes with your fingers properly to produce the correct notes. However you will get used to it after playing for a short period of time.
For some reasons most professional players play the open hole model.
The clarinet also has some open holes that you have to put the fingers properly to cover them. As you have been playing clarinet for long time, I don't think an open hole flute would cause you problems.
If you like the closed hole model better, try the Yamaha 321. It has similar features as that of the 361 but with a lower price. If you start with the 221, you'll find that you have to buy a better model after playing for a short time, may be within 2 years. If you starts with a 361 or 321, you don't have to upgrade it for 3 or 4 years, depending on your advancement.
You may check the details of Yamaha 361 and other models at Yamaha's web site :

i also suggest a open holed flute for a beginer (thats what I first used) BUT DONT USE THE PLUGS, it will take about a month before you can play without leaks and you will get frusterated, but leave them out. I learned that the hard way, lol! Good luck, and the flute is a GREAT instrument to learn!

A couple of 221s that I tried were very good and were well built, as well. They could last a long time until you are ready for a new Powell. Good luck!!
