I have been shopping around online for custom hand made oboe reeds, and ever site i have been to charges different prices for the same reed wrapped in a different color thread. For example on a website i just visited, a reed wrapped in black thread was 6 dollars, where as a reed wrapped in red was 10 dollars. What is the difference? My other question is if any members of this forum have bought oboe reeds from any of the following companies, and what/how was their experience.
www.singindog.com
www.forrestsmusic.com
and there were some other i dont remember, i think one of them was
www.oboe.net
Thanks a lot!

On some company's websites, different reed colors mean different levels of reed. I.e., red could be a 'beginner' reed and black could be 'intermediate' and so on. Sites like Edmund Neilson have a system like this that they explain. Forrests I've heard is good but Do NOT go with Midwest Musical. I know one of the reedmakers and he isn't too hot. The best thing though, would be to find someone close to you to make them for you. You never know what you're getting with online reeds and unless you know how to adjust them, you're left with what you have.

Serious oboe players make their own reeds so that they can learn to adjust them for their best performance. After a while, you find that it is not costly to make your own reeds. Good luck!!
