Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has heard of or owns a drop swab (the type with a weight) especially designed for the upper joint of an oboe. I was thinking about buying one and trimming excess material so it will go all the way through the where the reed is inserted, but am worried maybe the weight would get stuck. Also I'm not too crazy about shaving the metal. There are so many oboists on this forum, I hope someone can help! Thanks

Silk swabs are available for oboes that are useable in the upper section of oboes. When I use mine, I insert the weight from the bottom part of the top section and then carefully and slowly pull it out from where the reed is inserted.

don't worry about it going all the way through the oboe in the top joint. I actually use an English Horn cloth, which I pull until it stops, and pull back out the other way. It seems to clean it better. That's my opinion though.

ALL swabs designed for the oboe should go all the way through. If it doesn't you should check to make sure that 1.) You have a silk swab and 2.) You swab is designed for the oboe and not the clarinet. Clarinet swabs appear to be the same but they are much bigger.

If you're not confident pulling one swab through your whole oboe you can also get a two piece set. I have one that has one swab designed specifically for the upper joint, it's smaller than the swab for the lower joint.

I got a two piece swab set with my Yamaha oboe, I'm sure you could buy them. The weights on both swabs are the same size, so if you did trim a larger one then you shouldn't have to worry about the weight getting stuck.

theres also a type of swab for oboes that have thin linked metal instead of a weight that can go all the way through. if you live near a strait music you might want to go there and ask for one.
