I've always heard that Japanese and Chinese Brands were not that good but isn't Yamaha a Japanese Brand?

yes,yamaha is a japanese brand
chinese brands are improving,but certainly,their standard are still not high enough yet
yamaha is good,they are famous in asia for making piano and winds instruments.

don't get it wrong.
yamaha is an incredibly high standard brand.
the japanese make very good instruments.
miyazawa, yanagisawa are some of the other famous brands.
they are also prominently used by players from all around the world including professionals from america, asia, and europe.
as for chinese brands. they will need some time. for now.

Someone's right, the major japanese companies make good instruments...at least woodwinds...my band director is a brass player, and she steers all our brass players clear of the japanese brands....any brass players here who have similar experiences with japanese brands?

There seems to be some confusion regarding national stigmas in the original post. Japanese brands like Yanagisawa, Yamaha, Muramatsu, and Miyazawa have been well thought of for a long time. You are mistaking *Taiwanese* brands, for Japanese in this case. Taiwanese instruments are a mixed bag. Some are rather good I've found, like Jupiter and Antigua Winds. Some Unision saxophones also seems to be well thought of among players. LA Sax and Cannonball have mixed reviews. Most of the praise, however, comes from intermediate players who are impressed with owning their first horn. Technicians and advanced players have less good to say about them. Helmke, Maxam, Winston, and Monique are Taiwanese brands that have rather poor reputations.
China, according to what I've heard, are on the verge of producing top quality instruments. nearly everything that's come out of that country to this point, however, has been dreadfull. Instruments made in India have been even worse, according to reputation.

Japanese brands are pretty good, for alto sax the yamagasowa is an awesome brand. the yamaha is a japanese brand it isnt my favorite though.
