(I've actually figured out how to play Db on a normal Piccolo)

Why does the Alto Flute have such a muddy high octave?

Saxplaya is right the Alto is ment for lower music not all the high stuff the C Flute plays.

at first glance, and experience with a larger flute, one would probably run into some problems. Kind of like the relation between the oboe and english horn. for one 8 bar phrase, in 4/4 at: quarter note=120, the oboe uses up 1 liter of air, and the english horn uses up approximately 2-3 litres for the same function...so, The answer to almost any problem...air! The one thing I know, is that air will make a vibration, which will in turn make a sound. If you don't have enough air, the vibration will be too slow, muffled or won't produce at all. Be sure to keep your mouth in an O shape, to ensure that the air that is being forced out of your lungs has a clear passage, to ensure beautiful resonation.

I noticed you asked why the alto has a muddy sound in the higher octaves. I higher octaves I have noticed sound a lot better on nickel-plated silver bodies than it does on solid silver bodies. However, at an MENC conference I found a very rare solid silver head and body alto that has a clear upper octave, sounding just like a flute. If I remember correctly it was a deMedici alto. It takes a while but you can find better quality altos that have a clear sound throughout all the octaves. The quality of the instrument makes a big difference.
