howdy again yall. its me again. i was just wondering this time if anybody has purchased any tenor saxophones from ebay? i am also interested in buying a helmke tenor sax. i want to know if they are worth it. maybe even another brand.
any help would be greatly appreciated

I bought a clarinet from Ebay before. Their prices are affordable, and the instruments are pretty good too. eBay is definitely very reliable.

i have bought an alto sax and a trumpet on ebay. the sax is great but the trumpet wasn't.
just a few ebay tips for anyone who is considering this:
1)make sure you know enough about that instrument to make a good judgement call
2)always check the seller's feedback
3)if the seller says that they don't know alot about the instrument then chances are its in bad shape and they don't know it
4)if the price seems to good for even ebay then it probably is
5)if you have any questions about the instrument then email the seller and make sure you get a straight answer before making a bid on the instruments

A couple things that can be considered the definitive word:
1) Ebay is NOT reliable. Ebay is a mixed bag. Getting an instrument the size of a tenor saxophone in playable shape off of ebay is a much slimmer proposition than finding a playable plastic clarinet. You could end up buying a $450 tenor requiring $450 in repairs quite easliy
2) Being in a hurry to buy something like a saxophone is a bad idea. People in a rush and on a budget tend to buy thinks like a Helmke.

Something to keep in mind: Ebay is NOT a company or representatives of dealers or manufacturers. The sellers are individuals who are trying to get rid of items - and not just musical instuments - they do not want or need. Essentally it is an on-line flea market. There may be some bargains, but there is also a lot of just plain junk.
The safest thing would be to get the seller to agree to allow you to return it after trial period. However, I don't know if this is a common practice or not.

yes, dori, after you recieve the item you are allowed so many days(depending on what you and the seller have agreed upon)to return and get your money back. but if you follow the tips i posted earlier you should get a good instrument(or whatever you are buying). my family uses ebay alot so i know what i'm talking about. hope this helps

Hi,
I have both purchased and sold my instruments on ebay. Just make sure you ask a great deal of questions such as:
-smoking/non-smoking household (makes a big difference)
-how old the instrument is?
-When was the last time it was repaired or serviced?
Also, ask yourself how much money you would be willing to spend with the assumption that it needed a complete overhaul. I worked at a major music company and usually an overhaul or repad on a tenor would run about $400. I usually assume that a sax that is visually in good condition will cost me about $100-$150 in repairs, of if you bid up to $450 for a Yamaha student tenor and have to put $200 into it, you've got a great sax for $650, when they go for up to $2000 new!!!
I would also say , with the utmost of concern for you, never ever buy a $300 New! sax on ebay. Also, avoid supermarket, Costco, JC Penny and any other department store instruments. Being both a public school music teacher and an ex-employee of a large music distributor, I can tell you without fail, those instruments are horrible and will break constantly. They will sound great at first and the cost is very tempting, but the corks and felts will break first along with the case, then the metal will bend and dent and the pads will go. The amount you will spend on repairs will soon add up to what you could have paid for a good sax like a Selmer or a Yamaha. Good Luck.
