Hey i just started playing Bari Sax a week ago (switched from alto) and not matter what i do with my mouth, i cannot hit A low D, Db, C, B, Or Bb (lol, this is a CHEAP bari with no low A)without playing a higher note first and then going down (eg. to play low D, i have to play an E first and then go down to a D on the same breath). this makes some of my songs difficult to play. my band director said it could be that i have too hard of a reed (la voz med.), but i want to see what you guys have to say. thanx!

Well, D is usually where all the problems start on saxophones. It could be a huge variety of problems. You said no matter what you do with your mouth but just make sure you are dropping your jaw low enough to create a loose embouchure. As my jazz band teacher puts it: You don't have an embouchure when you play bari, your jaw just hangs. Seeing as how you are just coming from alto, this is a problem that makes sense. If you unhinge your jaw and still can't hit those notes, make sure the pads for those notes are sealing all the way when you press down the keys. A La Voz medium shouldn't be too hard, but you can go down a size if nothing else works. Above all: Breath support, blow consistent air.

Also try opening your throat more, as if you're saying 'Awwww' in your lowest voice. Search around for a certain topic here from someone who have the similiar problems as yours, you might find some extra ideas. I'll bump the topic up for your reference if I can find it. ^_^

Your problem might be that you aren't dropping your jaw low enough because I had your same problem switching from soprano clarinet to contra alto and contra bass clarinet. If that doesn't help then there might be something wrong with the instrument, otherwise, you'll get the hang of it. Hope I helped you! Bu bye!

I had the same exact problem wheh I started on the Baritone Saxophone. I didn't listen to my director and what he told me, I just lowered my jaw, didn't blow as hard, and pulled my mouthpiece out more.

I don't suggest pulling out the mouthpiece. All it does is make all the other notes flat. That means if you play a G it will sound more like an F# than a G. I suggest you drop your jaw, and think lower. It doesn't make sense but i have taught many people the bari sax and i'm only 14. If all else fails, use a softer reed. Hope that helps.

Try practicing on your own time and do it really loud and blow in your sax hard and long. After a while, you'll be able to do it. Then work on your loudness. It worked for me, hope it works for you.
