 Crack in wooden instrument...
Author: Marielle

I am currently using a wooden oboe that belongs to my school. When I first got it, there was already a crack in the upper joint, from the person who previously used it. She kind of abused it, so I wasn't surprised when I found it. However, I've noticed that's it gotten larger since I've had the oboe. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting bigger at home, or will I need to take it into a shop?

I'm not a stranger to wooden instruments. I've owned an all-wooden Gemeinhardt piccolo for a year now, plus I've played the violin and viola for 6 years. So I know how to care for and prevent cracks and warpage... just not how to stop them from spreading. Could anyone help me on this? :)

definitely have it taken in to see if they can pin the crack, but if there is a hole right through the bore, then that joint is toast. Tell whoever the "band teacher" is that takes of these instruments that you can't leave a wooden oboe outside in the rain and then bring it in and leave it for 10 years next to the furnace. Oboes don't just crack because they feel like it. As long as the instrument is properly broken in, and then not exposed to drastic temperature changes, and is played frequently, then the instrument shouldn't crack.

How much would that cost? I feel a bit reluctant paying for an instrument that's not even mine, when I didn't even start the crack in the first place.

Marielle: School should pay for the repair.

dboe: A certain percentage of wooden instruments will crack regardless of how well they are taken care of.

Dee: Yes, but since we're on summer vacation right now, I have no way of getting it to my teacher until August, when marching band practice starts. I just want to stop it before it gets any worse.

I agree that some instruments do crack, but the point I was trying to make was that some people wonder why their instruments crack when they, for example, leave them out in the car on a cold day, and then play them right away. I have found that the more severe cracks are on instruments that are of poor quality, and usually belong to people who don't take very good care of them. Anyways, what I would suggest Marielle is that you call your teacher, and ask him if you could get it repaired, and the school could pay you back when school starts again. Also make sure you take it to someone who specializes in repairing oboes, as some people don't have the necessary training that's needed to do the job.

The above is all good advice. Cracks can sometimes be repaired using "super glue". The glue is carefully applied by an expert in oboe repair and the instrument immediately held by a strong clamp to close the crack on the glue. The glue is amazingly good for this and pinning can sometimes be avoided by this. Good luck!!
