i'm playing this piece of music and at a point in the music it says 'calmato' i thought it meant calm but the music seems to get more intense at that point. it seems like the music should be loud and emphatic. what does calmato mean? also how do i play calm? do i play softer and legato? anything helps.

According to my music dictionary, calmato means 'calmed'. I would think to play calmly, you would play with less articulation: not so much staccato and more smoothly. Not necessarily leggato, which means with no tonguing at all, but with only gentle tonguing.

According to "Elson's Music Dictionary"
Calma ~ Calmness,
Calmate ~ tranquility,
Calmato ~ repose.
(just wondering, , how do you get the little things over the letters, like a or something when you're typing? I've never been able to figure that out.)

Calmato in italian is when you relax after a moment of agitation

that's interesting silverflute... What I'm gathering from the definitions is one of two things:
-that the music has already reached its climax, and is winding down
-or that the music is about to hit a big surge of energy, as if it were experiencing an uneasy calm.
It's hard to say what exactly is going on as I don't have the music, but maybe try to find a recording to see how people are playing it.

dboe I don't think it's the second choice because as I told, calmato is relax AFTER tension, and not before (yeah you can also exploit after beeing "calmato" but it's not included in the definition of that term).
We use to say "calmati!" (the imperative form of the verb "calmare"... to becalm etc) when a person is angry or in tension, to say: "relax!"... and this is only an example.
