Long tones. Try Trevor Wye's Tone Book. Long tones are no fun, but it's the only way to improve.

Time, and lots of practice. Long tones are very helpful, but only if you do them consistantly for a decent amount of time every day. Constantly adjust your embouchure. Never be happy with what you have. Try different positions on the lip plate: roll in/out, check where your air stream is coming out of in a mirror (on some people it isn't in the very center of the lips) and line it up with the middle of the hole. Also, a lot of flutists have problems with relaxing. Check yourself in the mirror, on high notes and low notes. Obviously, you're going to be more tight on the high notes. What you want is not to pull at the corners of your mouth, or anywhere else. It takes awhile to get rid of. For a long time, I struggled with this. I'd practice a few times a week, but that was it. Once I started practicing EVERY DAY, I noticed that I got less and less tense when I played. Really. Practice helps. And watch that you're not very airy when you play. Some days will be worse than others. On a good day, take note of what you're doing. Try to do that consistently. Wow, that was long. I'll stop now :)

Actually, you DO want to pull the corners of your mouth back. This will create a bigger opening (which will at first be very hard to control) and can give you greater projection and a fuller tone.
