 Eb Alto Saxophone

I'm planning to buy an alto saxophone but I wan't to know which brands are the best. I want a durable but not so expensive. I was encouraged to buy a "MIRAGE" brand Alto Saxophone from a music shop but I didn't want to risk it since I've never heard of this brand and I have not heard any comments from this brand. If anyone has any comment on this brand please give me your feedback.. Right now I'm seeking a Yamaha which costs $1300 but I don't know if it is a good brand because I've heard comments that Selmer is better and a Selmer has the same price.Hope you guys can help me.

as a rule of thumb, purchase brands that you know. Selmer and Yamaha are close to comparison when it comes down, but it depends on what models and such. i know the Mark series of saxs from Selmer are top quality. play test the saxs you wish to purchase, choose which one responds and give you the sound you enjoy. the Yamaha may prove to be a better sax for your tastes and needs. hope this helps.

Selmer and Yamaha are the best saxophones. You'd certainly have no problems buying either. But 1300 is not going to be a top-of-the-range model anyway, so if you get really good at it, you may by another one later.

$1300 isn't going to get you a "Mark Anything". He is invaribly looking at perhaps a Selmer USA AS-300 vs a Yamaha YAS 23 or the like. Personally, I have not dealt with the new student Selmer USA's (not to be confused with Selmer Paris), and have only limited experience with the YAS-23. Either one would be very likely be better than a "Mirage", which is obviously a rebadged, cheap Taiwaneese or Chinese instrument of dubious quality.

I recon a Yamaha would be the way to go.
try and get one with a high F#(altimisso) key

Definetly go with the Yamaha. Yamaha's are excellent student models. They are also very durable, something you are looking for. Some minor faults I have had with my own Yamaha can be dealt with. The factory mouth piece can crack at the tip over extended use, but it can be replaced. Secondly some screws can get loose as the saxophone vibrates during long playing sessions. Personally I think the Selmer is too clunky and the fingerings feel a little out of place compared to the Yamaha. My advice...stick with Yamaha for durability and quality.

What kind of sax r u lookin for a beginner or professional? I started on a yamaha as a beginner. There student model is good to start off on. But the Professional brand the Custom is wicked sweet, plus you can get it in black. I play on a Julius Keilworth, it's a newer model, and it has a huge bell, and dark laquer so it has a dark sound. I didn't care very much for the selmer. I prefer the yamaha. The only thing good about the professional model is that it comes with a selmer sea star. which is an awesome mouth peice for concert band.
