Before you start building a saxophone, it might be better to start by building a clarinet. The saxophone has a conical bore; that is, it gets wider as it gets further from the mouthpiece. This makes it very difficult to make. The Hungarian tarogato is like a saxophone made out of wood, but other than this, all saxophones are made of metal. It is not an easy job to make a cone of metal. On the other hand, clarinets have a cylindrical bore, so any piece of metal or plastic tubing will do. Search on the web for "xaphoon" and find details of a man in Hawaii who created a clarinet out of bamboo, although it sounds like a saxophone.
