what is the V floating above the staff in some of my music. it is flute music and i'm don't mean the upside down accent mark. i have seen the V in debussy's prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune. i was told that the V meant up bow but that is meant so for string instruments. if so why is it in my flute music!? anyway what is the V in this circumstance and what does it mean? at first i thought it meant vibrato.

In vocal music, this sign when placed above and between notes means to take a breath at this point. It may be the same in Flute music.
