is this possible on a clarinet? okay, i heard that a alto saxophone can play a low it is either bflat or a by covering up half of the bell with their thigh. i was wondering if a clarinet could do this to and maybe get an Eflat. if this is possible, it may the answer to Lorna Milton's earlier post.

If you distort your embochure, and really drop that jaw, you can possibly drop it enough to get a low Eb. Maybe you could try covering the bell though too...

which type of clarinet? for clarients, covering the bell wont make a huge difference liek a sax because of the type of bore. clarinet being cylindrical and the sax being conical. the alto and lower can go lower they have extensions that drop the puitch down another semi-tone. some bass clarinet and contra-alto/bass have the range down to low C. and for covering up the bell on an alto sax, wouldn't be the best, you couldn't be able to accurately pitch below the Bb to the A, it could come out as a quarter-tone, or even bleow the A or come out as just a really flat Bb. not to mention of awkward it would be to put your thigh on the bell or how funny it would look. hope this helps.

Some soprano Bb clarinets are extra long and have an extra key to play down to Eb. Instead of four keys for the right little finger, there are five. But this type of clarinet is quite rare.

on the clarinet the bell doesn't do anything to the sound you could just take off the bell and it would sound exactly the same so i don't think so on a regular clarinet

Using an English Horn bell will make a low Eb, it also works with Bassoons and making Low A. Its just an all around good thing that every instrument can use, lol.

a fun thing to try is to pull out every joint as far as possible on your clarinet, it gives u a makeshift "A clarinet" that is quite out of tune with itself which would give u a low Eb and maybe even a D if u lip it down enough. Uses include: playing with others creating a lovely half-step dissonance and having an excuse to squeak because the bridge isn't aligned correctly. Try it, you'll like it. :D
