I've seen a photo of an Ab Sopranino clarinet. They look ridiculously small! I've never seen on in real life, though. Are you in Italy? I've heard that these clarinets are still used in bands in Italy.

You saw the name "Riccardo" and put two and two together...that's brilliant, Gnomon!
I've played Eb clarinet and always wanted to try the Ab clarinet..has a fantastic sound! My fingers will almost ceratinly be too big for it, unfortunately. As an orchestration student I have found they have been used in several Hollywood motion pictures:
1. Hatari, a 1960's African movie starring John Wayne
2. 101 Dalmations (live action version)in the introducton
3. Batman Returns (only briefly)
4. The Christmas Story

I am delighted to say that I have been trying to convince several bandsmen (bandspersons) that an A flat clarinet (piccolo clarinet) even exists. We had one--of all places--in grade school!
Our band director, a Mr. Thala Rush, had ties to the Chicago Symphony, consequently we had several unusual instruments, including a contra bassoon. We were indeed fortunate to have him as our director. He brought the A flat clarinet to our grade school and wrote a duet for piccolo flute and piccolo clarinet. As I recall, it was a fantastically cute piece and the 2 gals who played were excellent in their technique.
I have been thinking that I should contact my old grade school to see if that little gem of an instrument is still there. I graduated from that school in 1964 and a lot can happen in 40 years.

I think I own one of these seemingly rare small beasts...Mine is as yet unrestored and measures 18" mp-bell...and is keyed in the albert system....and can be bought.

reading this now... almost a year later, but for interests sake I don't think that the clarinet mentioned by D. Hinson is a Ab sopranino. At 18" the instrument he describes is only approx. 1" shorter than an Eb... so I would guess it to be a 'D' soprano clarinet. An Ab would likely be a little shorter than that, perhaps around 16" I would estimate... although I've yet to see one in the flesh myself as well...
