Hey all,
I'm a junior in high school, and I'll be a senior next year. I'm thinking of going into music for college, with a special interest in composition.
I don't know if anyone is aware of the AP (Advanced Placement) Music Theory Exam. I know it's given in May each year. I'd say that I have a good background of Theory, and I've taken Music Theory in my school. I want to take the test next year, so that I may have a chance of earning those credits to whatever college I may go next year.
Have any of you taken it? If any of you did, can you tell me what stuff is on it? Or if the credits are useful at some schools (I know they may not be useful at all for some)? Or is there a site that tells the criteria of the test? If any of you have information, please tell me. Thanks!

Is there an AP Music Theory class at your school, or is it just something you have to do on your own? You might want to ask your band/orchestra director about what might be on it...

I can't tell you how helpful it is, outside of actually having the knowledge. In most schools, it doesn't help you "skip out" of classes, because they have their own prescribed paths of theory and history to take.
So yes, it is good to know what's on the test, but the test itself is not necessarily that beneficial.

Be prepared to identify mistakes in written music versus what you hear. There are also questions on terms, and they have passages for you to study and they ask you questions about those.
There is also a written part where you have to compose your own small excerpt.

go to outside music places to learn theory, try to get up to grade 3 or 4 in theory, it will take time, but in compostion, you can never have enough theory. music theory given in school, isn't always everything, because of restrainsts of learning music and techiniques for your instrument. in composition, you really need to know the ins and outs of how music works. being in advanced music shouldn't compinsate for classes in college/university, you should take as many as you can get, so you know everything you need to know. hope this helps.

If you go to www.collegboard.com you can find out how the AP Board describes the test. It should have a pretty good description of what to expect and tips on how to prepare.
