At my school some oboes play in the pit, but also a lot of double reeds do what the call "faking" where they just march with an instrument but they dont play it, they are just there to fill in a spot on the drill.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR OBOE ON THE FIELD EVER!!!!!!!!!! I played flute my freshman year and it is very easy to pick up and every oboe player should learn flute anyway. Calrinet is possible but it is HARD. My sophomore year and this upcoming year I have been playing bells in marching band and my friend has been playing cymbals. PLEASE again, you will regret playing your oboe on the field, it will never play the same again. Play an instrument you don't mind having mediocre pads and getting wet and cold. Wood oboes will crack!!!!
