I'd fit into the 'joe who does music on the side' category.

Put me in the "Joe who does music on the side" category, too.

I guess I should have given more info: I have been playing clarinet for over 37 years. Currently I am playing in a university concert band and have experience with school bands, community bands, woodwind quintet, and chamber orchestra.

Thanks to all who post on this site. There is so much useful and interesting info here.

I'm currently a junior in high school. I've played clarinet for 7 years, and played piano for 8 (I have a preference for jazz piano.)

Ember- A freshman is 9th grade, sophomore is 10th, junior is 11th, and senior is 12th. Hope that helps!

I am going to be a freshman this year. Someone told me I have a really good chance of beating next year's sophomore to get in wind ensemble, so I'm really busy! Silly oboe rules, saying one has to stay in regular band no matter what!

But grades of what? :D high school? Sorry but it's difficult. In Italy you: 1) born 2) go to child school (if you parents want) till the age of 6 3) go to primary school till 10 4) go to secondary school till 13 5) go to high school (classical, scientific, linguistic etc lycee or professional school, or art school etc) till 18 6) go to University until you take the degree (it's 3+2 years). I'm in the second year of Psichology University.

Conservatory is different. You can do it while doing other studies or not, the important thing is that you take the secondary school diploma, wich is compulsory.

Yes, Ember... Eowyn was mentioning grades of high school. Our high school system and your high school system, as far as years go, are pretty similar. Unfortunately, most of us don't get to go to a special high school like you got to (I wish there was a performing arts high school near where I live... but I wouldn't be able to go there anyway). For our high school, it's divided into 4 years, and we must learn everything, from music, to math, to english, to P.E. (UGH!!!!!!). A 14 or 15 year old would be in 9th grade (freshman). A 15 or 16 year old would be in 10th grade (sophomore). A 16 or 17 year old would be in 11th grade (junior). And a 17 or 18 year old would be in 12th grade (senior). Hope this helps!

Ok thank you very much, now I understand :)

We have to learn everything too at the high school but for example in classical lycee we study also ancient greek and latin and we study more philosophy and poetry etc than in scientific lycee (and they will study better phisics, chemistry etc). But the subjects are almost the same :)

Is it true that University is very expensive over there?

Yeah... Universities are getting more and more expensive each year. I mean, compare about 7 years ago to now... and... ah! In less than 2 years, I will be going to college myself, and I know that I'm going to have to use up all my savings, work, and get loans from a bank to go, most likely.

Ember, that's cool how you learn all the subjects in your country, yet the focus is on whatever you want (literature or the sciences...)

Hope this helps. I know this is not really musical-related, but it's probably important that you know how the school system works in the United States in order to understand what we're talking about.

Yeah, you were very nice tank you :)

Here Universities are expensive but not too much. "Poor" often people can have a lot of things free (house, food etc) if they're good students. Books are really expensive but you can always buy used ones and re-sell them after use.

Conservatory is very cheap and has a lot of very very good teachers. And in the first year they give you an instrument, you can buy your own instrument later.
